Drug Addiction Is More Than Just A Habit, It Is A Mental Problem

By: Perry Clayman

For many years, drug addiction is considered as a bad habit. This is how addiction treatment programs consider addiction to be. It is a problem of the body and thus the body must be the focus of the treatment. But today, a different approach has been discovered. Drug addiction is not just a habit; it is a mental problem and should be treated as such.

Drug addiction starts with a few tries. After the tries, the person start doing it on a regular basis, thus, it becomes a habit. A habit is something that one does regularly. It becomes part of his system and therefore, it is hard to shake off. The body has already gotten used to the substance. If a person addicted to drugs didn’t take drugs for some time, his body will not feel right. This is due to the fact that part of its system is missing.

Drug addiction is a habit and it is a bad habit. For years, this is how addiction treatment programs in drug rehab centres believe. Most addiction treatments are focused on how to separate the habit of drug addiction from the system. The body should get used to without drugs in its system.

Is Drug Addiction A Mental Problem?

There are studies that stress the fact that drug addiction is more than just a habit, it is actually a mental problem and should be dealt as such. It can be lined with other mental problems like schizophrenia. Drug addiction is said to have stemmed from a psychiatric disorder.

When a person takes drug, the feeling of euphoria and being high is felt not by the body but by the mind. Therefore, the effect of drugs is mental and not physical. So it follows, that it is the mind that becomes addicted to the effects of drugs and therefore, it is the one that craves for it. The mind develops the habit of taking drugs. Once the person stops taking drugs, the mind send impulses that trigger drug cravings.

Because drug addiction is a mental problem, addiction treatment programs must focus on the mind. The addiction treatment program should concentrate on conditioning the mind to minimise drug cravings. When the mind is already conditioned, it is easier for the person to recover from drug addiction.

Most drug rehab centres understand the importance of setting the right mindset in recovering from drug addiction. To ensure you are getting the right help, you should check the addiction treatment program of the drug rehab centre you are eyeing at.
